IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, people have more interests in hiring personal trainers rather than choosing a healthy habit as playing sports or going gym. The concept of having a specific coach to look after ones fitness goals and keep the person motivated has become influential in high percentage of population. Individuals approach this facilitation because it is quite beneficial. It is a positive development but we cannot ignore the significance of playing sports and joining gyms.

To elaborate some reasons, the primary of them is generally the shortage of time. There are some folks who have busy schedules due to workload. It also includes individuals who own a certain buisness and they cannot manage going to gym or take part in sport activities. Moreover, there are women who are just homemakers and they cannot leave their infants at daily basis to join a gym training. For such reasons, the choice of personal trainer holds a paramount value. This helps them have scheduled online or in person classes according to their own routines. This saves them time and fulfills their body needs to stay healthy.

Probing ahead, sport activities and exercise classes are crucial part of fitness programs. This provides a chance to engage with other people and creates an atmosphere of enthusiasm. This boosts the confidence to do better in games and set a goal to achieve something. Watching other people achieving healthy body goals and getting reviews from social circle persuades a person to be healthy too. For this reason , the plan to join sports and exercise classes is a positive development too.

I believe that both these approaches are positive developments for mankind. Their is no negativity in them as both have same consequences and that is providing health and fitness.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the reasons for hiring personal trainers and whether it is a positive or negative development. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, the reasons regarding busy schedules and homemakers are relevant and supported with specific examples like business owners and infants. On the other hand, the discussion on whether this trend is positive or negative is somewhat generalized, particularly when concluding that both approaches simply have the same positive consequence of providing health and fitness without exploring deeper nuances. The position is clear throughout, but the depth of development varies between paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to reasons for hiring trainers, contrasting benefits of group sports, and a final personal stance. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transition markers like 'Probing ahead' feel unnatural and inappropriate for formal academic or general writing. Referencing and linking devices are present, such as 'Moreover' and 'For such reasons', but paragraph transitions and internal referencing occasionally lack smoothness, resulting in a somewhat rigid flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common lexical items such as 'paramount value', 'influence', and 'enthusiasm'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that reflect this level, such as 'buisness' instead of 'business', 'ones' instead of 'one's', 'facilitation' instead of 'facility' or 'service', and the prepositional error 'going gym' instead of 'going to the gym'. While these inaccuracies do not seriously impede communication, they demonstrate limitations in precision and word formation that prevent access to higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences like 'There are some folks who have busy schedules due to workload.' However, there are several grammar and punctuation errors present throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb and article agreement issues such as 'people have more interests', 'on daily basis', and 'Their is no negativity' instead of 'There is'. Punctuation errors also occur, such as the unnecessary space before the comma in 'For this reason ,'. These errors are recurrent but rarely impede overall comprehension, reflecting a moderate level of structural control.
