IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, there has been a growing trend of individuals employing a personal fitness trainer instead of participating in group sports or exercise classes. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this shift and argue that it is largely a positive development.

There are several reasons why people prefer personal trainer. Firstly, personal training offers customized workout plans. Unlike group classes where one routine is followed by everyone, a personal trainer designs a program according to an individual's body type, fitness, levels and specfic goals, such as weight loss or music building. Secondly, modern lifestyles are extremely busy. People in cities like Lahore or Islambad often have unpredictable work schedules, so they find it difficult to attend fixed-time sports clubs. A personal trainer provides flexibility in timing. Finally, the influence of social media cannot be ignored. Many people want a perfect body shape like fitness influencers, and they believe a personal trainer can help them achieve faster results.

In my opinion, this is a positive development, although it has some drawbacks. The main advantage is that it leads to better health outcomes, with one-to-one attention, people exercise correctly and avoid injuries, which makes them more consistent. For example, someone with a back problem will get safe exercises from a trainer, which a group class cannot provide. Moreover, it reduces social interaction, which is a key benefit of playing team sports like cricket or football.

Overall, people are hiring personal trainers because of the need for personalized flexible and fast results. Despite its high cost and less social aspect, I believe it is a positive trend because it promotes a healthier and more desciplined lifestyle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives several reasons for hiring trainers and clearly states that this is “largely a positive development.” The points about tailored programmes and flexible scheduling are relevant, and the back-problem example helps illustrate the safety benefit. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. The social-media point, for instance, says people expect faster results but does not explore why this leads them to choose individual training over classes. There is also a mismatch in the evaluation: the essay calls the trend positive, then says it “reduces social interaction,” without clarifying how this drawback affects the overall judgement. Develop that contrast and support the reasons more evenly to make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph evaluating the trend, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Finally,” and “Overall” make the progression explicit. This provides a coherent foundation, though the linking can feel somewhat mechanical. The evaluation paragraph also moves from health benefits to reduced social interaction without a clear transition explaining the relationship between these points. In addition, “Moreover” introduces a drawback even though the paragraph begins by presenting the development as positive. Use more varied, precise transitions and make the contrast between benefits and drawbacks explicit so that the argument flows more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The response uses an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “customized workout plans,” “unpredictable work schedules,” “one-to-one attention,” and “health outcomes.” These phrases help communicate the main ideas, and the writer attempts more specific language when discussing fitness goals and injury prevention. Some word choices and spelling errors, however, reduce precision: “music building” appears to be an incorrect choice for a fitness goal, while “specfic,” “Islambad,” and “desciplined” are misspelled. “Fitness levels” is also more natural than “fitness, levels.” Aim for accurate collocations and proofread carefully, especially where a single word can change the meaning. More precise phrasing would make the vocabulary more flexible and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled well, such as “A personal trainer provides flexibility in timing” and the example beginning “For example, someone with a back problem…”. The writer also uses subordinate clauses and relative structures to explain ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, but they rarely prevent understanding. For example, “people prefer personal trainer” needs an article or plural form, and the sentence beginning “The main advantage is that it leads to better health outcomes” joins two independent clauses with a comma. The final sentence also needs clearer punctuation around the list of benefits. Review articles, sentence boundaries, and comma use, while continuing to practise varied complex structures.
