IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Nowadays, many people hire personal fitness trainers rather than engaging in sporting activities or attending exercise classes, which may be attributed to their busy work schedule and personalised fitness need. This trend is a positive development because it helps individuals to meet their fitness goal at their own pace and allows the trainers to earn more money.
There are several reasons why people may choose to hire a personal fitness instructor. Firstly, many individuals have varied work schedule which makes it difficult for them to attend routine exercise programmes. However, having a personal trainer can afford them the flexibility to choose a training plan that suits their schedule and leisure time. Secondly, people have different fitness goals. Therefore, with the help of an instructor, individual's fitness goal can be achieved with a personalised exercise routine and diet plan.
This is a positive development because it allows people to engage in the necessary activities required for them to meet their fitness goals. They can do this at their own pace without the fear of not meeting up with the strength and endurance level of others in a joint exercise session. Furthermore, this trend offers instructors the opportunity to earn more money because personalized training is more expensive than the regular exercise classes. Therefore, it is a win-win situation for both the trainer and the student.
In conclusion, many people now hire personal fitness trainers to help them meet their desired physical needs instead of participating in the regular sport activities or exercise classes, which may be due to their unstable work schedule. This trend is a positive development because it encourages individuals to meet their fitness goals and provides instructors with more money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you give two reasons for hiring trainers—work-schedule flexibility and personalised goals—and clearly state that you see the trend as positive. The explanation that clients can train at their own pace is relevant and helps support your view. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed. For example, the claim that trainers earn more money explains a benefit to instructors, but it is not explored as fully as the benefits to clients, and the response gives no concrete example to illustrate either reason. To strengthen the response, explain how tailored scheduling or programmes work in practice and develop the effects of this trend beyond the brief “win-win” conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, a paragraph evaluating the trend, and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposting such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Furthermore” helps the reader follow the argument. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the linking is occasionally mechanical, with several points introduced through explicit connectors rather than developed through closer relationships between ideas. The conclusion also largely repeats the introduction and the positive-effects paragraph. Use more varied referencing and transitions, and make the final paragraph synthesise the reasons and evaluation rather than restating them.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “personal fitness trainers,” “exercise routine,” “fitness goals,” and “strength and endurance.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and phrases such as “personalised exercise routine” show an attempt to be precise. Some word choices and collocations are less natural, however: “personalised fitness need” would be clearer as “individual fitness needs,” while “meeting up with the strength and endurance level” is awkward. “Unstable work schedule” also does not accurately express the intended idea of a changing or demanding schedule. Aim for more natural collocations and consistent spelling conventions for “personalised/personalized”; this would make the vocabulary more precise without changing your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “which makes it difficult for them to attend” and “because personalized training is more expensive.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and punctuation is generally controlled. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, possessives, and articles. For example, “varied work schedule” needs a plural or an article, “individuals have” should replace “individuals have varied work schedule,” and “individual's fitness goal” needs a plural possessive or a clearer singular construction. “Their desired physical needs” also has an unclear grammatical relationship. Review agreement and noun phrases, then proofread for apostrophes and articles. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
