IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the current age where we live, an increasing number of people are interested in having their own fitness trainer, rather than participating in sports activities or regular exercises like yoga or cardio. They tend to believe that they can train better when they are under supervision. I also agree with their thoughts as a personalized trainer can help them achieve their goals faster. This creates a positive reinforcement in their personal achievement ladders.
One should think of it as school or a corporate job, where you have to reach some goals to get promoted to the next level. When a person is exercising on their own, they are linient on skipping a day whenever they want, but with a trainer they will be required to show up everyday. In this way, people like to be under pressure to get their tasks done.
Also, with a trainer, you can have a regular review of your performance and you can also have daily access to diet and exercise advices. The mobile applications or youtube programs that help you train, are designed to help masses and are not personalized. They feel more robotic and they all follow a specific algorithm. While, with a human trainer you can even vent out about a bad day during a workout session. This gives them a feeling of social belonging that they cannot have while training alone.
In my experience, I achieved my weight-loss goal earlier when I trained with a personal trainer as oppose to when I used to follow a mobile application. A solo exercise session can feel like a task, but with another person it may feel like a walk in the park on a cloudy day!

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your response addresses both parts of the question: you explain why people choose trainers, citing supervision, accountability, tailored advice and social interaction, and you clearly judge this as a positive development. The personal example about reaching your weight-loss goal adds relevant support. This meets the task well, and the range of reasons shows some of the fuller development expected at the next level. However, a few points are asserted more than explained: for example, the comparison with school or work does not fully show why external pressure is beneficial, and the claim about “positive reinforcement” is not clarified. Develop these links and briefly acknowledge a possible drawback, such as cost or dependence on a trainer, to make the evaluation more balanced and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs explain reasons, and the final paragraph adds personal experience. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking phrases such as “Also” and “In my experience” help the reader follow the discussion. At times, however, connections are mechanical or the reference is unclear. The shift from the school/work comparison to “people like to be under pressure” could be explained more explicitly, while “This gives them a feeling” follows a sentence about a human trainer and could refer more clearly to the client. The final paragraph also introduces an example without a distinct concluding summary. Use more precise referencing and make the relationship between each example and your main judgement explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including “under supervision,” “personalized,” “performance,” “social belonging” and “weight-loss goal.” These choices communicate your ideas, and some less common expressions show an effort to be precise. There are also several inaccurate or unnatural choices that keep the vocabulary from sounding consistently controlled: “personal achievement ladders” is unclear, “linient” is misspelled, and “exercise advices” uses an uncountable noun incorrectly. “As oppose to” is also an inaccurate phrase. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling and word forms; for instance, describe progress towards personal goals rather than an “achievement ladder.” The figurative phrase “a walk in the park on a cloudy day” is vivid but confusing in this context, so a more direct comparison would be clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including subordinate clauses in “When a person is exercising on their own” and the contrast beginning “While, with a human trainer.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation choices are noticeable. For example, “as oppose to” should be “as opposed to,” and “they are linient on skipping” has an awkward grammatical construction. In “The mobile applications or youtube programs that help you train, are designed,” the comma separates the subject from its verb; “While” should not be followed by a comma in the middle of that contrast. There is also a shift between general “you” and “they.” Review sentence boundaries, verb forms and consistent pronoun use while retaining your varied sentence structures.
