IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Nowadays people preffer to hire a personal gym trainer instead of joining sports club or exercise classes. This trend is becoming common in many countries due to several reasons.
First and most important reason for this is it helps them to set a timetable for exercise which is suitable to them. As life is becoming busy for people and work is prioritised over everything. They prefer flexibility in rest of the schedule. Once a trainer told me he was being called at home at 1:00 am for a training.
Second reason is people wants to keep their life private. They dont want to visit the class where group of people are present and being trained under the same roof by the same person. They want a limited interaction with common people. Another reason is some people thinks that every body needs a different kind of daily exercise to maintain their lifestyle. Similar kind of exercise will not help them to attain certain fitness goal. In short they require a focused attention of trainer on themselves.
In my oppinion it's a negative development. It is a waste of time and energy of people. A person who can train a group of twenty people in the same time is training a single person. At the end of the day he will only be able to train limited people. It is not economically beneficial. One has to pay more for a seprate training. The most negative impact is on sports. People are leaving interest in sports, specailly the young generation. Sports not only keeps the body fit but it also helps to build strong mind and character. This trend should not be promoted at any level.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both parts of the question: you give several reasons for hiring a personal trainer and clearly state that you see this as a negative development. Flexibility, privacy and individualised exercise are relevant explanations, while your points about cost, trainer capacity and reduced interest in sport support your position. The example of a trainer being called at 1:00 am adds a personal detail, but its relevance is not fully explained, and the claim that people are losing interest in sports—especially young people—would benefit from evidence or a clearer link to personal training. Some ideas are therefore less fully developed than others. Explain the consequences of each reason and support your main claims with more specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph explaining reasons, and a final paragraph giving your view and supporting arguments. Sequencing phrases such as “First,” “Second reason,” and “Another reason” help readers follow the list of causes, and “In my opinion” signals your position. However, the repeated list-style transitions make the progression somewhat mechanical, and some connections between ideas are abrupt. For example, the trainer’s late-night visit is introduced without explaining how it illustrates flexibility. The final paragraph also moves quickly from efficiency and cost to the effect on sport. Use clearer links between claims and consequences, and develop each paragraph around a connected line of reasoning rather than a sequence of separate points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “personal fitness trainer,” “flexibility,” “fitness goal,” “focused attention,” and “economically beneficial.” These choices show an attempt to discuss the issue beyond basic exercise vocabulary. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural phrases reduce accuracy, such as “preffer,” “oppinion,” “seprate,” and “keeps the body fit.” Some expressions are also vague, including “common people” and “at any level.” Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, describe people as “members of the public” or “other participants,” and say that sport “promotes physical fitness.” This would make your argument sound more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “A person who can train a group of twenty people…” and a contrast in “not only… but it also…”. The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “people wants” should be “people want,” and “some people thinks” should be “some people think.” The sentence beginning “As life is becoming busy…” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence, while “Once a trainer told me he was being called…” has an unclear tense relationship. There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and ensure each sentence has a complete main clause; then vary complex structures while keeping them controlled.
