IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hiring a personal trainer in many parts of the world is becoming increasingly common instead of taking part in sports or exercise sessions. There are multiple reasons for this growing trend which will be discussed in this essay.

The most prominent reason of this idea is its highly successful results in achieving fitness goals. The fitness trainers have the required knowledge and experience in their field which helps their trainees to reach their goals. While on the other hand, individuals who workout without a personal trainer may take longer to attain their goals or may even hurt themselves due to lack of knowledge. For example, personal trainers individually provide training throughout the session and closely monitor each and every movement. They also provide nutritional plans at the same time leading to the best results in shortest period of time.

In my opinion, it is a very constructive approach in succeeding one's fitness goals. The reason behind this is to utilise the only time they get in their busy lives. In the professional life, everyone is spending most of their time at work and travelling. At the end of the day, they hardly get any time to exercise or take part in sports. Eventhough they manage to spare some time, they do not have enough energy or confidence to keep them fit. Therefore, having a personal trainer makes it easier for them to follow the routine workout due to their motivation and staying healthy by following their meal plans.

In conclusion, hiring a personal trainer is a convenient and productive option to stay fit and healthy. However, individuals should also take part in sports whenever possible to get some fresh air and socialise with others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both parts of the question: it gives reasons for hiring a trainer, including expert guidance, injury prevention and support with nutrition, and clearly judges the trend positively. The example of trainers monitoring movements helps explain the benefits, while the discussion of busy working lives provides a second relevant reason. This meets the core requirements, and the position is clear. However, the reasons are not equally developed: the time-pressure point is explained, but the response could more directly compare personal training with sports or group classes, for example by explaining why people prefer individual attention or flexible scheduling. The final suggestion to participate in sports is relevant but could be connected more explicitly to the overall evaluation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to reasons, a positive evaluation and a conclusion. Paragraphs have identifiable purposes, and linking expressions such as “For example,” “Therefore” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the argument. This shows sound organisation and progression. At times, however, connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear: “The most prominent reason of this idea” does not clearly identify the trend, and “The reason behind this” follows the opinion without smoothly linking it to the preceding discussion. The contrast introduced by “While on the other hand” is also awkward. To strengthen cohesion, use more precise references and make transitions express the exact relationship between ideas rather than relying on formulaic linkers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for discussing fitness and personal training, with relevant terms such as “fitness goals,” “nutritional plans,” “routine workout” and “socialise.” The writer also attempts more formal expressions, including “constructive approach” and “attain their goals,” showing some range. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “reason of this idea” and “succeeding one's fitness goals” are not idiomatic, while “the best results in shortest period of time” needs more natural phrasing. “Eventhough” is also misspelled as one word. Aim to learn common collocations and check spelling, especially when using formal vocabulary; this will make the argument sound more fluent without requiring more complicated words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex structures, including relative clauses (“which helps their trainees to reach their goals”), a conditional construction (“whenever possible”) and a concession clause (“Even though they manage to spare some time”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely obstruct understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “The fitness trainers have the required knowledge … which helps,” the singular verb does not agree with the plural reference; “individuals who workout” needs a noun form or a different construction; and “they hardly get any time to exercise or take part in sports” is followed by an unclear pronoun reference in “they do not have enough energy.” There are also awkward sentence patterns, such as “The reason behind this is to utilise…”. Review agreement, clause construction and pronoun reference to improve control.
