IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In some countries, more and more people are hiring a personal fitness trainer, rather than playing sports or doing exercise classes. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or a negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, a lot of people prefer working with personal fitness coaches rather than involving in sports or exercise classes. This can be due to aim for consistency powered by the motivation they get from their trainers and also fear of sports and exercise-related injuries. The outcome of what ever choice they made is exactly what matters.

People tend to choose what seems easier and sustainable most aspects of their life especially when it comes to exercising. A personal instructor serves as a stimulant for them to wake up every morning, put on their gym pants and drive to the gym bearing in mind that someone would have to call them if they are absent. For instance it is easier for a regular person to feel tired on a monday morning and decide to stay back since he does not really have anyone to answer to. Unlike in sports where your team members are so many and may not notice your absence.

Secondly, the frequency of sport and exercise-related injuries especially among novices has instilled fear in some individuals. Due to poor skills and detailed guidiance some persons tend to do some activities wrongly, thereby sustaining terrible injuries. With the aid of a personal coach, certain injuries are avoidable since it will be the responsibility of the coach to guide a novice and what he is capable of doing per time.

Hiring personal trainers is actually a good upgrade to the routine sports and exercise sessions as it will encourage consistency and perfection among individuals who wants a reasonable outcome of their gym programs

In conclusion, many people hire personal trainers due to many reasons which all points to consistency and safety. It is also recommeded that sports clubs should organise coaching classes for their members.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both parts of the question: you give reasons for choosing a trainer—motivation and injury prevention—and state that this is a positive development, calling it “a good upgrade.” The examples about accountability on Monday mornings and guidance for novices make the reasons relevant. However, the positive evaluation is asserted more than explained: “consistency and perfection” is not clarified, and the conclusion shifts to recommending coaching classes for sports clubs without showing how this supports your view. The injury point also needs more precise development, since you do not compare the risks of trainer-led exercise with those of sports or classes. Explain the benefits and any limitations of personal training more fully to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs explaining reasons, a statement of your view, and a conclusion. “Secondly” helps signal the move to the second reason, and the examples generally follow the points they illustrate. Some connections are less clear or mechanical, however. The opening says “The outcome of what ever choice they made is exactly what matters,” but this idea is not developed later. The paragraph beginning “Hiring personal trainers” reads as a separate opinion paragraph, while the conclusion repeats the reasons and introduces a new recommendation. Improve progression by linking each reason explicitly to why you consider the trend positive, and make the final paragraph summarise rather than add a new point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “personal fitness coaches,” “consistency,” “injuries,” and “novices.” There are also attempts at less common vocabulary, such as “stimulant” and “sustainable,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context: a trainer is better described as a source of motivation than a “stimulant,” and “perfection” does not clearly express the intended benefit of exercise. Spelling and word-form slips such as “guidiance” and “recommeded” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, but more precise collocations would make the argument clearer and more natural. Prefer familiar, accurate phrasing when a more ambitious word does not fit.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause (“since it will be the responsibility of the coach…”) and a contrast introduced by “Unlike.” The main meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “rather than involving in sports” needs a different construction, and “individuals who wants” has a subject–verb agreement error. The sentence beginning “Due to poor skills and detailed guidiance” is also incomplete as written, while “what ever choice they made” has an unclear tense and structure. There are occasional punctuation and capitalisation problems, such as “monday.” Review verb agreement, clause completeness, and sentence boundaries, then proofread for consistent punctuation.
