Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir/Madam,
I am writing you to request that I want to switch the course that have,I have booked in your institution.
Firstly, after i finished my secondary eduction in Commerce stream, I took admission in computer science as a part time student. However, I have paid $800 for enrollment.
Furthermore, I want to pursue my further studies in abroad, my mentor suggested me to continue studies in same stream. In addition to this, it would not only help me to get visa, but also give me wide knowledge about accounting. As a result,my studies can help me to get job in same stream.
Lastly, I would like to request that I want to change my course for aforementioned reason. As November 10th is a last date to change course, so your promt response to this matter would be appreciated.
I look forward to hearing back from you soon. An open line of communication from your side will be helpful in this matter.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover the main purposes of the letter: you identify the computer science course, explain that you plan to study abroad and have been advised to continue in another stream, and request a course change. The reason is relevant, and the reference to the November 10 deadline adds useful context. This meets the task well, though some details are not fully clear: you say you want to “switch the course” but do not name the different course you hope to book, and the connection between changing courses, obtaining a visa, and studying accounting needs clearer explanation. To strengthen the response further, state the new course explicitly and develop the reason for cancelling the original booking more directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable progression from the booking, to your circumstances, to the request and closing. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” help signal this order, and the deadline is placed near the request. However, the connectors sometimes feel mechanical, and several ideas are crowded into one paragraph. The relationship between studying abroad, the visa, accounting, and changing courses is not always easy to follow. The final sentence about an “open line of communication” repeats the request for a response rather than adding a distinct point. Use separate paragraphs for the booking, explanation, and request, and connect ideas by meaning rather than relying on a list of transition words.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of vocabulary relevant to education and administration, including “part time student,” “enrollment,” “pursue my further studies,” and “visa.” These choices make your purpose understandable, and “aforementioned reason” shows an attempt at a more formal register. However, some word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise, such as “in abroad,” “wide knowledge,” and “get job in same stream.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “eduction” and “promt,” which reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim for natural formal phrases and check spelling carefully; precise wording will make the explanation sound more confident and professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the “not only … but also” construction and a sentence giving a reason for the request. The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors make parts of the letter awkward. For example, “I am writing you to request that I want to switch” combines two request patterns, while “the course that have” has an unclear relative clause and incorrect verb agreement. In “As November 10th is a last date …, so,” the clause structure is also faulty. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly after sentence boundaries. Practise forming direct, complete request sentences and check articles, agreement, and clause connections.
