Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Good Day!

I would like to request request for cancellation for the part-time course that I have booked recently and also if I can request to change it from another part-time course. I booked for the English part-time Course and it happens that I have changed my mind for some reason. I found another part-time course that make me more interested and I believe that I will enjoy it more. I decided if I can book Science part-time Course instead. I will be happy and excited if I can get a slot in this part-time course that Im requesting.

I apologise for the inconvenience that may cause and hoping for consideration for my request. Im looking forward to hear from you. You can reach out from me in this email or you can call me anytime from the same number that I given you.

Best Regards,

Andrea

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three requested points: you identify the English course, explain that you have changed your mind, and ask to book the Science course instead. The request is understandable and appropriately polite, with an apology and an invitation for the college to contact you. This meets the task well, but the reason for cancelling is only briefly stated as “changed my mind,” and the request could be clearer about whether you want the original booking cancelled and the new course booked. To make the letter more complete, give a specific reason for the change and ask directly about availability, fees, or the steps needed to transfer your booking.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a sensible overall order: it introduces the cancellation and course change, then closes with an apology and contact details. The paragraphs also separate the main request from the closing. However, several ideas are crowded into the first paragraph, and the repeated use of “and” and “if” makes the request feel somewhat mechanical. The connection between cancelling the English course and booking Science could be signposted more clearly. Use shorter sentences and a clear sequence—for example, state the cancellation first, explain the reason, then ask whether a place is available on the alternative course. This would make the progression easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “cancellation,” “part-time course,” “inconvenience,” and “consideration,” so your meaning is generally clear. However, some phrases are repetitive or do not sound natural in a formal letter: “request request for cancellation,” “book for the English part-time Course,” and “reach out from me” are examples. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Course.” Aim for precise, natural collocations and a consistently formal register. For instance, “cancel my enrolment” and “contact me by email or telephone” express your meaning more idiomatically. A wider range of suitable phrases would help you make the request more polished.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the main message remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly in clause construction and verb patterns. In “I decided if I can book Science,” the structure does not clearly express a request; “I would like to ask whether I can book the Science course” is more accurate. “I’m looking forward to hear from you” needs the gerund “hearing,” while “hoping for consideration” is an incomplete clause in this context. There are also missing apostrophes in “Im” and punctuation issues around sentence boundaries. Practise forming polite indirect questions and complete sentences, while checking verb forms after expressions such as “look forward to.”
