Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to you with regards my decision to cancel a part- time course that I had reserved my seat of it last week.
As I am doing study in electronics engineering. I get an opportunity to participate in the additional course that was introduced on last Friday by our college management as it is based on learning about how a make a project on physics subject. Therefore , I thought it would be helpful in case of getting ideas about working on practical sessions.
I want to decline it now since I could not able to cope with my hectic schedule as I have to attend my lectures from 8 am to 6pm, this will start at 4 pm everyday and only for two hours, so that would not possible for me to join it.
Instead , there is another course running my our college which is relate to same my stream and it has adjustable timetable facility to so could you please cancel my booking for afternoon course that I mentioned and make a reservation for this part-time session.
I hope you will cope with my request and provide assistance to cancel my recent booking.
Yours sincerely,
Bhagwant Kaur.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly hampered by grammatical inaccuracies, which occasionally make the reasoning difficult to follow. For instance, the explanation regarding the schedule conflict is somewhat convoluted. Despite this, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands the request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the conflict is more concise and logically structured to avoid confusion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Instead', and 'As' helps to connect ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'that I had reserved my seat of it'. The flow of information is generally logical, but the paragraphing could be improved by ensuring each paragraph focuses strictly on one aspect of the prompt. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the structure supports the reader's understanding.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs effectively. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'hectic schedule' and 'adjustable timetable facility'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'doing study in' instead of 'studying' and 'relate to same my stream' instead of 'related to my field of study'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with verb tense, preposition usage, and sentence fragments, such as 'As I am doing study in electronics engineering.' and 'this will start at 4 pm everyday and only for two hours, so that would not possible for me to join it.' These errors are persistent throughout the text. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and sentence construction would significantly improve the clarity and accuracy of the writing.
