You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing to request for cancelation of my part-time course, which I booked last month at your college.

I enrolled in a part- time course related to the French language, which is for six months. The course staring date is 30th August 2026, it is a foundation course, which not only cover the basics of French, but also included the practice tests at the end of the course.

The reason why I am unable to join the course is my study visa. I have been waiting for my Canada visa for nine months, finally I got my visa approval. So I have to book my flight as soon as possible. So, kindly accept my request for cancelation of this course.

Please assist me If there are any online course part time courses are available regarding the language or IT. Kindly send me further detail regarding available courses for September intake.

I look forward to receiving your response at your earlier convenience.

Yours Faithfully,

Nardeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the course (French language), provided a valid reason for cancellation (visa approval and travel plans), and inquired about alternative online options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details provided are grammatically accurate, as some minor errors in the description of the course (e.g., 'staring date') slightly detract from the professional presentation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your request easily. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'The reason why' and 'Please assist me' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the repetition of 'So' at the beginning of consecutive sentences in the third paragraph makes the flow feel slightly mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words would improve the overall cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate your message effectively. Phrases like 'enrolled in', 'foundation course', and 'at your earlier convenience' are appropriate for this formal context. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'request for cancelation' (should be 'request the cancellation of') and 'staring date' (should be 'start date'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'which not only cover' (should be 'covers') and 'If there are any online course part time courses are available' (which is syntactically redundant). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with comma usage. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the errors do not cause confusion, but more consistent control over subject-verb agreement and sentence structure is needed for a higher score.
