Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to request you to cancel my booking for the part-time course of CNC Machinist which I booked last week on 15th August during the webinar hosted in assembly hall for all the college students.
To begin with, I booked this specific course because of my intense interest in machines and I was looking forward to learn in depth about the set ups, programming and machine mechanism .Additionally, this course will be six weeks long starting from 1st September and ends on 15th October during this time my brother is getting married due to which, I will not be able to attend maximum of the modules so this is why I need to cancel my booking because I will be to attending all of the functions and helping my family in arranging them accordingly.
Therefore, I heard about the robot technician course which might be starting by the end of October. I would really appreciate it if you could help me with booking of that course at your convenient time. Also, if there are other courses available please forward me the list so I can explore more of it.
I hope you will accept my request and I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhman

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Task Response | 8.5 |
| Coherence and Cohesion | 7.5 |
| Lexical Resource | 7.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 7.0 |
| Overall | 7.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the CNC Machinist course, provided a logical and personal reason for the cancellation (a family wedding), and inquired about the robot technician course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the explanation of the cancellation and the request for a new course is slightly more seamless, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore' to connect your ideas. While the flow is generally good, some sentences are slightly long and could benefit from more precise punctuation to improve the logical progression. For example, the second paragraph contains a very long sentence that could be split to enhance clarity. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'webinar', 'mechanism', and 'prompt response' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'attend maximum of the modules' (should be 'attend the majority of the modules') and 'at your convenient time' (should be 'at your convenience'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to academic or administrative contexts to show a wider range of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I will be to attending' (should be 'I will be attending') and 'explore more of it' (should be 'explore other options'). Punctuation is generally functional, though some sentences are run-on, which affects the overall grammatical accuracy. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage would help elevate your score in this criterion.
