Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you to cancel my booking in your college named Humber College for a part-time course in IT field, which I completed last week.
I booked a part-time course Cloud Data Management which provides the knowledge about the both IT and Business aspects. I searched a lot and I came to know that your tutors are experienced and your college also provides hands-on experience, which is good option to get a optimum job.
I want to cancel my booking for that because now from the course guidelines and your college website I get knew that most the courses I have already studied in my Masters, which I think would not only waste my time but also it would be the wastage of money.
As I recently completed my study in two year diploma named Wireless Information Technology, so, now further I want to select a course that would provide me advanced knowledge related to my previous study. If I can get a recommendation about a different relevant course, then it would be easier for me to choose.
Thank you for your understanding, hope you will take my request in consideration.
Your faithfully,
Manisha.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a recommendation for a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; for instance, the second paragraph provides unnecessary background information about the college's reputation rather than focusing on the specific course details. To improve, ensure that every sentence directly supports the purpose of the letter. Overall, the message is clear and the requirements of the task are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As I recently' and 'If I can get', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. For example, the jump from the course description to the cancellation reason could be better connected. Using a wider variety of linking words would help improve the overall flow and coherence of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'optimum job', 'guidelines', and 'relevant course'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing or word choice, such as 'get knew' instead of 'realized' or 'found out', and 'wastage of money' which is slightly unnatural compared to 'waste of money'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation and idiomatic usage. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal business-related phrases would elevate your writing to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the both IT and Business' (should be 'both IT and business'), 'most the courses' (should be 'most of the courses'), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are varied enough to convey your message effectively. Focusing on proofreading for common grammatical slips will help improve your accuracy.
