IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.
Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:
- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear sir,
I am Krupa Mehta , a part time student who enrolled in your college for a part time course writing this letter to request you to abandon my booking for the same.
I am going to start my diploma in a part-time course which is business management starting this year in may.
Unfortunately, I have to cancel my admission for that subject as this is a offline course in which I need to attend the classes five days a week in person. Initially, I was ready to do that but then I recently got promoted in my office which has raised my responsibilities and my commitments. Because of that, I might not be able to attend my all classes in-person.
Moreover, I am keen to add one more feather on my cap by enrolling for a business analytics course which gives me flexibility to attend it online.
I hope you will understand my situation and will help me to change my programme.
Thank you.
Your’s faithfully,
Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the course booked, provide a logical reason for the cancellation (increased work responsibilities), and inquire about an alternative online course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are fully conventional; for instance, 'Dear Sir or Madam' was requested, but you used 'Dear sir'. Additionally, ensure the purpose of the letter is stated more concisely in the opening sentence to improve clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to cancel, to the explanation, and finally to the inquiry about a new course. While the use of cohesive devices is generally effective, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in light of this') would improve the flow between sentences and help the letter feel more cohesive and professional.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'responsibilities', and 'flexibility'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'abandon my booking' (a more natural choice would be 'cancel my registration') and 'add one more feather on my cap' (the idiom is 'a feather in my cap'). These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise vocabulary usage to reach the higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'a offline course' (should be 'an offline course'), 'attend my all classes' (should be 'attend all my classes'), and 'Your’s faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on article usage and possessive pronouns. Increasing the frequency of error-free sentences will help you move toward a higher band score.
