Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Madam,
I am writing this letter to just inform you to cancel my booking for music course which I booked last week. I am student of 2nd year of Biology department . [redacted phone] is my student ID .
The mainly reason I am canceling this booking that I booked this course just under the pressure of my parents . As my father wishes to become a singer so he want me to fulfill his dream in future but I realised that if i'll continue this part time course that will effect my studies as well .
I am interested in art and craft as I am best at making useful things from waste .It will be a pleasure if you could cancel my previous booking and then booked me for Art course which is starting next week . I know its not easy for you but i wish you could do this for me
Looking forward for your response .
Yours sincerely
Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a new course. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it occasionally slips into a more conversational style. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the requirements of the prompt effectively. The student maintains a consistent purpose throughout the letter, and the request for a course change is clearly articulated. To reach a higher band, the student could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific course titles or the nature of the 'Art' course to demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. There is a progression of ideas from the initial request to the explanation and finally the new proposal. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the explanation of the parents' pressure and the student's own interests could be smoother. While the paragraphing is appropriate, the letter would benefit from a wider variety of linking words and phrases to improve the flow between sentences and ideas, moving beyond simple conjunctions like 'and' or 'but'.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'The mainly reason' instead of 'The main reason' and 'booked me for Art course' instead of 'enrolled me in an art course'. While the student attempts to use specific vocabulary related to their situation, there is a lack of precision in word choice. The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or the use of less common lexical items required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('he want me to'), article usage ('the music course', 'an Art course'), and tense consistency ('if i'll continue... that will effect'). Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas and inconsistent capitalization. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to indicate a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
