Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am pleased to write regarding the booking of my part-time course which I recently booked. For some reason I want to change my course and request to book another one.

Part time program which I selected was Recreation Therapy. The booking wad done exactly about one week ago. I have not paid the tuition fee yet. Even though I understood that this course is easy and beneficial to me, there are some reasons to select the different course.

One of the main reasons is that the program which I want to study perfectly combined with my previous studies. Therefore, it is beneficial to me to study this course instead of Recreation Therapy.

Another thing is that I want to study full-time course and this course of available.

Please book the Therapeutic Recreation full-time program.

I appreciate your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Sandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the cancellation, and requesting a new one. However, the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall score. The explanation for the cancellation is somewhat vague; stating 'there are some reasons' without clearly articulating why the previous choice is no longer suitable makes the argument feel underdeveloped. To improve, you should provide more specific details regarding your academic goals or scheduling conflicts to ensure the request is fully justified and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, the explanation, and the request. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition 'Another thing is that...' is quite informal and lacks the sophistication expected at higher bands. Using a wider variety of cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore,' 'Consequently,' or 'In light of this,' would improve the logical progression and make the text feel more professional and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'For some reason' and 'Another thing is' are repetitive and basic. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'this course of available' (should be 'this course is available') and 'The booking wad done' (typo). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise academic or professional terminology, such as 'enrolled in,' 'academic requirements,' or 'transfer my registration.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'program which I want to study perfectly combined with my previous studies' (tense error) and 'this course of available' (missing verb). Punctuation is generally correct, but the sentence structure is often repetitive. Increasing the use of complex sentences with accurate subordinate clauses would demonstrate better control. Proofreading for small errors like 'wad' instead of 'was' is essential to improve your accuracy score.
