Student answer (Band 7.0)
DEAR SIR,
I HOPE THIS LETTER FINDS YOU WELL. I AM WRITING THIS LETTER, TO DROP OF MY ADMISSION FROM PART-TIME CULLUNIRY COURSE.
AS MENTIONED EARLIER, I AM WORKING AS A HUMAN RESOUCE ASSISTANT. FOR THE CAREER ADVANCEMENT, I NEED TO PURSUE CHRP DESIGNATION. I HAVE MY EXAM DATE JUST IN BETWEEN THE COURSE. AS A RESULT, I NEED TO SPEND AFTER WORK HOURS FOR THE STUDIES.
AS COOKING IS MY PASSION, THE PART COURSE CAN HELP ME TO ENAHANCE MY LEVEL. UNFORTUNATELY, I WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THIS YEAR. AS MY EXAM DATE IS NEXT MONTH, I WOULD BE INTRESTED IN PART TIME COURSE WHICH WILL START A MONTH AFTER. I AM PARTCULARY INTERESTED IN HOME SCIENCE. IF YOU HAVE ANY COURSE AVAILABLE IN SAME CATEGORY, I WOULD LIKE YOU TO PROVIDE ME WITH THE DETAILS FOR THE SAME.
I WILL BE WAITING FOR YOUR REPLY, WITH THE AVAILABLE OPTIONS.
REGARDS,
HARDI THAKAR

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and inquiring about a future alternative. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. However, the development of ideas is slightly hindered by some lack of clarity in the explanation of the exam schedule and the connection between the current course and the desired future course. Despite these minor issues, the purpose of the letter is clear, and all parts of the task are covered sufficiently.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., the frequent use of 'as' to start sentences). While the paragraphing is appropriate, the transition between the explanation of the current situation and the request for a new course could be smoother. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the message is conveyed without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, though there are several spelling errors ('CULLUNIRY', 'RESOUCE', 'ENAHANCE', 'INTRESTED', 'PARTCULARY') that detract from the professional tone. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the necessary information, but there is little use of less common or sophisticated lexical items. To improve, you should focus on proofreading for spelling accuracy and attempting to use more precise collocations related to academic or professional contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'drop of my admission' (should be 'withdraw from'), 'part course' (should be 'part-time course'), and 'in between the course' (should be 'during the course'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some unnecessary commas. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of the message. Increasing the variety of complex structures and focusing on prepositional accuracy would help raise the score.
