Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request the cancellation of a part-time course that I booked at your college.
Initially I was planning to opt in a cyber security course. Unfortunately my plan have been changed and now I have decided to cancel my reservation for this part-time course. Actually, I worked for bell Canada as a field technician, my company requires me to enhance my skills in cabling. Therefore I have decided to get admission in network cabling course. After completing this course, I will be eligible to challenge the exam to obtain a certification of qualification. Obtaining this certificate of qualification is my first priority. Therefore I request you to cancel my previous booking and enrol me in upcoming network cabling course. I will be really grateful to you.
Please let me know if there is any additional information required from my side.
Sincerely,
Maninderpal singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a transfer to a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, you mention your job as a field technician, but you could have provided more specific details about why the cabling course is essential for your career progression to make the letter more persuasive. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the explanation and finally the request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'Initially', which help link your ideas. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as a single block. To improve, you should separate the introduction, the explanation, and the request into distinct paragraphs. This would make the structure clearer and more professional for a formal correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'field technician', 'cabling', and 'certification of qualification'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'opt in a cyber security course' (should be 'opt for') and 'get admission in' (should be 'enroll in'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. Expanding your range of formal expressions would help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For instance, 'my plan have been changed' should be 'my plans have changed', and 'enrol me in upcoming network cabling course' lacks the necessary article 'the'. Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the opening ('Dear Sir,') where the prompt specifically requested 'Dear Sir or Madam,'. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
