Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to inform you that i want to cancel my booking for part-time course Digital Marketing. Which is scheduled to begin next month.

Unfortunately, I recently start my job which required full-time employee for the evening shifts and the classes is also in the evening time. I want to participate in the classes because of work schedule i can not attend classes regularly. So, I want to cancel my booking for course.

I was wondering if you could recommend any other course related to the digital marketing but the timing is on weekends or in the morning time. I will take admission in that course. It will be easy for me to focus on both work or study. Please let me know that my fee will be transferred to the new course or should i need to complete new registration for that.

Thank you for your understanding and i looking forward for your response.

Yours sincerely,

Jaspreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation (a new job with conflicting shifts), and inquiring about alternative options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. There are no omissions, and the response maintains a consistent focus on the requested information throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'So', and 'However' (implied) are used to link sentences, though the use of these could be more varied to improve flow. The referencing is generally clear, although some sentence structures are slightly fragmented, such as starting a sentence with 'Which is scheduled...'. Overall, the letter is coherent and the paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of the request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'take admission' instead of 'enroll' or 'register'. While the range is sufficient to cover the topic, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication, but the word choices are somewhat basic and repetitive in places, such as the repeated use of 'classes' and 'course'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, such as 'I recently start my job' (should be 'started') and 'the classes is' (should be 'are'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as the lowercase 'i' used throughout. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. To improve, the writer should focus on consistent tense usage and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy.
