You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

My name is Khushal, first year B-tech student and I am writing this letter in order request a cancellation on a part-time course that I booked at our collage.

It has recently noticed that the course which I booked called "Advanced Excel Sheet" training course is already a part of my main course. It is starting on 14th of August on monday. I was going through my subject lists yesterday and found out that the above mentioned subject is schedule for next semester for my program. It would be no worth of studying same class twice in my program. Instead I would like to change and opt another course.

So, the other part-time course which I am interested is learning solidworks. I have a keen interest to learn how to make 2D and 3D engineering drawings and get better in it. Apart from interest, it will provide me with introduction to designing which will further help me in my career as well.

I hope you will understand my requirement and help me to change my part-time course.

With regards,

Khushal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course you booked, provided a logical reason for the cancellation (it is already part of your main curriculum), and requested an alternative course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are consistent; you began with 'Dear Sir or Madam' as instructed but signed off with 'Dear Sir' in the body, which is a minor inconsistency. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from interest' and 'Instead', which help the flow of ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly underdeveloped; the letter could benefit from a clearer separation between the explanation of the cancellation and the request for the new course. Additionally, some transitions are a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words would help the text feel more natural and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'curriculum' (implied), 'opt', and 'keen interest'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'collage' instead of 'college' and 'subject is schedule' instead of 'scheduled'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the text from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'It has recently noticed' (passive voice error) and 'It would be no worth of studying' (incorrect preposition and structure). You also have some tense inconsistencies, such as 'is schedule' instead of 'is scheduled'. While you attempt complex sentences, the accuracy is inconsistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct passive voice construction will significantly improve your score in this criterion.
