Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request cancellation of my enrollment in the Evening Business Communication course at your college. My Student ID is A06326.

Since I have been allocated with a company project, I would not be able to attend the evening batch. I have booked this course according to my work schedule but at last moment my manager hand over the responsibility which cannot be denied.

Here, I would like to inquire if there are any morning courses available in the remaining Business field. Fortunately, I would have some time in the morning to attend classes. If the possibilities are limited what are the options for refund of tuition fee which I have.

paid while enrollment.

It would be appreciated if I can get chance to join morning course. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the cancellation, and inquiring about alternatives. However, the response falls slightly short of the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length negatively impacts the development of your ideas, particularly in the final paragraph where the request for a refund could have been expanded for better clarity and tone. To improve, ensure you provide slightly more detail in each section to comfortably meet the word count, which will allow you to demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'However', and 'If', which help the reader follow your train of thought. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as the split sentence 'paid while enrollment' which should have been integrated into the previous paragraph. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your sentences are fully formed within their respective paragraphs to maintain a smoother, more professional progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'enrollment', 'allocated', and 'tuition fee' appropriately. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'remaining Business field' and 'get chance to join', which sound slightly unnatural. While these errors do not impede communication, they limit your score. To improve, try to use more precise collocations and ensure your word choices align with the formal tone required for a letter to an administrator.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I have been allocated with a company project' (should be 'assigned to'), 'manager hand over' (should be 'handed over'), and 'If the possibilities are limited what are the options' (missing punctuation). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely cause confusion. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement, and ensure you proofread for missing articles or prepositions.
