Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

I am writing this letter to explain my situation regarding the part time English learning course which I booked in your collage and now I would like to change the course subject and would go with French learning course.

To explain more, I was thinking to learn English in depth and make that more powerful as I am living in English speaking country. However, I applied a course for my further study and I receive a conformation for that which prefer French language more rather than English. Hence, I would like to cancel my booking in that course I kindly request you to please change my course, which is part time so it will beneficial for me for my further study and assist me to my bright future.

Thank you so much for your support. If you need any documents regrading that please feel free to share.

Yours Faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a change. However, the development of these points is slightly repetitive and lacks clarity in certain areas. For instance, the explanation regarding the 'further study' and the preference for French is a bit convoluted. While the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, the structure could be more concise to ensure the message is conveyed effectively. Overall, the response covers the requirements of the task sufficiently to meet the criteria for a band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally awkward, such as the transition 'To explain more' and the phrasing 'Hence, I would like to cancel'. The connection between the desire to learn English and the sudden shift to needing French is not entirely smooth, which affects the overall flow. While the paragraphing is present, the internal cohesion within the paragraphs could be improved to achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several spelling errors, such as 'collage' instead of 'college', 'conformation' instead of 'confirmation', and 'regrading' instead of 'regarding'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the message. The student relies on basic phrasing like 'make that more powerful' and 'bright future', which are not entirely natural in this context. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and using more specific, formal collocations suitable for business correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I applied a course' (should be 'applied for a course'), 'I receive a conformation' (tense inconsistency), and 'assist me to my bright future' (incorrect preposition usage). While the meaning remains clear, these persistent errors in verb tense, prepositions, and sentence construction indicate a limited control over complex grammar. The punctuation is generally functional, but the overall accuracy needs significant improvement to reach a higher band.
