Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the cancellation, and inquiring about alternatives. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. The explanation for the cancellation is clear, but the request for a new course is phrased in a way that is slightly difficult to follow, particularly the description of the desired schedule. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening and closing phrases could be more standard. To improve, ensure that your requests are phrased more clearly and that your reasons are linked more smoothly to the context of the college.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the explanation of the cancellation and the request for a new course is abrupt. Some sentences are short and choppy, which affects the flow of the text. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words such as 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition' to connect your ideas more naturally. Additionally, ensure that each paragraph focuses on one clear idea to improve the overall logical progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'part-time course booking cancel' and 'everyone want work outside'. These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly unclear. You rely on basic vocabulary and struggle with collocations, such as 'huge difficulty' instead of 'significant challenge'. To reach a higher band, focus on learning common collocations related to formal correspondence and academic settings. Expanding your range of synonyms and using more precise verbs will help you convey your message more effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('last two months ago I booked'), missing articles ('in recent day'), and subject-verb agreement errors ('everyone want work'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly in the closing. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions and articles. Proofreading for these common errors before finishing your writing will significantly improve your accuracy.
