Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing this letter to sincerely applosize because I have to cancel my booking in a part-time course at your college.

I took admission at your college last week, for a evening batch of cooking classes. The name of the cooking course is CT003, where I can learn about South Indian cusinies. The classes would be held from 4 P.m to 6 P.m on every Monday and Friday.

I need to cancel my booking because I get a demo class about it, where I learn about north indian dishes. As I belong to north part of India I already know well about these cooking style. I want to learn something unique, that is why I took admission. When I talked about that with class teacher, they said they only have CT003 course available for evering batch related to north india food.

I would appreciate, if this problem could be solved. Since I already paid in the advance. It would be good either you can talk to your college teacher regarding this issue. If South indian food classes are not available in the evening batch please send me the another suitable options for evening.

I am waiting for your prompt action regarding this issue.

yours Faithfully,

Mandeep kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting information about alternative options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. While you explain why you want to cancel, the request for a different course is a bit vague. To improve, ensure that your explanation of the 'demo class' is more concise, as the current explanation is slightly repetitive. Overall, you have successfully communicated your purpose to the administrator, and the letter fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because', 'that is why', and 'since' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases. For instance, the transition between the explanation of the course and the reason for cancellation is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this problem' and 'that', which could be more explicitly defined to improve the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'part-time course', 'admission', and 'unique'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'applosize' (apologize), 'cusinies' (cuisines), 'evering' (evening), and 'the another' (another). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on accurate spelling and expanding your use of collocations. For example, instead of saying 'I took admission', it would be more natural to say 'I enrolled in'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I get a demo class' (should be 'I attended a demo class') and 'paid in the advance' (should be 'paid in advance'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While these errors are frequent, they rarely impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Focusing on these small details will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy in your writing.
