Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request you to cancel my booking of part-time course, as I took admission in Early childcare assistant program at you college located in Mississauga, ON.
Although this program is highly beneficial, I cannot persuade it, as it is not going well with my working profession. While working in a IT department at Canadian Tire, ECA course is not going well with it and I chose it under pressure of my family.
I acknowledged that I did huge mistake and the college has no such policy to refund a fee except changing the program. Therefore, it would be extremely appreciated if you switch my department ECA to Computer Analysis because plays a vital in my profession and significant to grow more in the same field.
I am apologies for this inconvenience and look forward to your prompt response about providing conformation of booking a different course. I am glad to pay necessary funds of choosing it.
Kind regards,
Harjit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a change to a different course. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the explanation for the cancellation is slightly confusing, as you mention both a conflict with your profession and family pressure. To improve, ensure your reasons are presented clearly and concisely. The request for the new course is clear, and the overall purpose of the letter is well-communicated to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphs are used to separate the different stages of your request, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Although', 'Therefore', and 'While', which help connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea will help elevate your score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'beneficial', 'inconvenience', and 'prompt response'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'persuade it' (instead of 'pursue it'), 'took admission' (instead of 'enrolled'), and 'plays a vital' (missing the noun, e.g., 'plays a vital role'). Some phrasing is slightly unnatural, which occasionally hinders the precision of your message. Focusing on learning common collocations and checking word forms will help you express your ideas more naturally and accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am apologies' (should be 'I apologize'), 'conformation' (should be 'confirmation'), and 'at you college' (should be 'at your college'). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main point, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for common slips would be beneficial.
