Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing a letter in order to cancel the booking which is related to a part-time course. The course is related to the mental health. In this course I want to get knowledge about the exercises which is information about our mental health. As my friend also took that course, she explain that it is useful course nowadays because we can learn how to keep our body fit and which things are necessary for our body.
But I want to cancel the booking of my course because it is conducted at afternoon and I need to go to work at that time. The timetable of this course and my work is same which make difficult for me to adjust. So I want to cancel this booking.
Apart from this, there are various another course such as cooking and music courses which are available at college. I request you to book one of that course in the morning batch which match my timetable. I am thankful to you if you cancel my booking.
Warm regards,
Tamanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the explanation regarding the course content is slightly repetitive and could be more concise. The request for a new course is clear, but you could have specified the preferred course title more clearly to ensure the administrator can process your request efficiently. Overall, the task is fully addressed, though the development of ideas is somewhat basic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'So', though the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but some transitions could be smoother to improve the overall readability. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. There are some instances of repetitive phrasing, such as 'the course is related to' and 'cancel the booking'. While you attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'timetable' and 'batch', the range is somewhat limited. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'various another course' (should be 'various other courses') and 'which match my timetable' (should be 'which matches'). These errors do not impede communication, but they limit the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the letter, such as 'she explain that' (should be 'she explained'), 'it is conducted at afternoon' (should be 'in the afternoon'), and 'the timetable... is same' (should be 'is the same'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage are inconsistent. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To reach a higher band, focus on consistent verb tense usage and correct article placement.
