Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request the cancellation of Mathematics teaching program, I enrolled as a part-time student at Mississauga branch.

Although such course is highly beneficial and compatible with my profession, recently I received a decent full-time job offer in a local school as a Math teacher. This condition does not allow me to attend coaching center regularly. Instead of wasting money, I would like to withdraw the course.

However, I am still interest to development my cognitive ability and really keen to join such courses if these are available either on weekends or in the evenings. Kindly provide me some information regarding them. I would like you know, is there any additional cost I have to pay to transfer my current course to different course?

If choosing a different course's option is not available, can have full refund?

Thank you for your understanding and time. I look forward to your prompt response.

Kind regards,

Harjit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course, provided a logical reason for the cancellation (a new job offer), and inquired about alternative scheduling and refund policies. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the request to the explanation and finally the inquiry. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Instead of', and 'However' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'highly beneficial', 'compatible with my profession', and 'cognitive ability' show a good command of language. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'interest to development' (should be 'interested in developing') and 'choosing a different course's option' (which is slightly awkward). Despite these, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Mathematics teaching program' (missing an article), 'such course' (should be 'such a course'), and 'can have full refund' (missing a subject 'can I have a full refund'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions.
