Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir, I hope you are doing well

I am writing a letter for requesting the cancelation of my booked course.

I registered for business marketing course . I booked it online on the website of college with the help of my elder sister but now I want to cancel my booking .To be honest, she insisted me to booked for this course because she graduated from business marketing and now working in one of the Multi national company with high package of salary.

The reason behind changing my decision is my interest in teaching. I want to become a teacher and looking for some learning course like Early childhood programs .

As per my preference , I would like to ask if you have any list of courses that helps in building my career in teaching.

I would appreciate to get answer from this email.

Warm Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and inquiring about alternative courses. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation regarding your sister's influence is a bit informal and could be more concise to allow for a more professional tone. To reach a higher band, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated clearly and professionally from the outset, and maintain a consistent formal register throughout the entire correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the explanation and finally the request for information. Paragraphing is present, though the structure is slightly fragmented. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'The reason behind' and 'As per my preference', which help guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated signposting to connect the ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'registered', 'preference', and 'appreciate'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'insisted me to booked' (should be 'insisted that I book') and 'high package of salary' (a more natural phrasing would be 'a high salary' or 'a lucrative salary'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations will significantly improve the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am writing a letter for requesting' (should be 'to request'), 'Multi national company' (should be 'multinational company'), and 'looking for some learning course' (should be 'looking for a course'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some inconsistencies in spacing and sentence construction. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage to improve accuracy.
