Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding the canceling of a part-time course I recently reserved at your college.

In the last week joined a part-time subject named "Artificial Intelligence" through college's official website. But now I want to cancel this booking and join another subject instead. The course code of appointed subject is ELEC-8283.

I need to cancel this booking because the course I wanted to adopt already had full enrollment. But now few of the seats are vacant. That's why now I am eager to join that subject. Additionally, this the core subject which is related to my electrical field. Hence, this will create great opportunities for me in the future.

I kindly request you to cancel my current reservation and in place of that enroll me in the subject named "Power System" code ELEC-8200. I would appreciate if you could cancel my booking and enroll me new course.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours Faithfully

Gagan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the course you booked, explain the reason for the cancellation (the availability of a more relevant course), and make a specific request to switch to a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation for the cancellation is more concise and flows more naturally, as the current explanation regarding the 'full enrollment' and 'vacant seats' is slightly repetitive and could be phrased more professionally.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Hence' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that subject') is always clear will help improve the flow and coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reservation', 'enrollment', and 'consideration'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'adopt' instead of 'enroll in' or 'select', and 'appointed subject' which sounds slightly unnatural in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on more precise collocations related to academic administration would strengthen your lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'In the last week joined' (missing subject 'I'), 'this the core subject' (missing verb 'is'), and 'enroll me new course' (missing preposition 'in'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the inclusion of necessary articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
