Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to cancel the booking of my part- time cooking course. Earlier I booked that course to learn how can I make high protein meals, however earlier I did not check the fee structure as well as the duration of this course. Because of my hectic schedule, it is not possible for me to attend the all classes .
Although I understand it is too late from my side for this request, if you can provide me any other courses list which is related to my course. Apart from it, I am only available for evening classes or weekend classes. I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. It is essential for me to cancel this course booking and humble request for the enrollment in other course.
Thank you for your time and consideration
Your sincerely,
Harmandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the course is identified, the reason for cancellation is provided, and a request for an alternative is made. However, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. The ideas are relevant but could be more fully developed to ensure the letter feels complete and professional. For instance, the explanation regarding the 'fee structure' and 'duration' is slightly vague. To improve, ensure you expand on your points to meet the length requirement and provide a more polished, formal tone suitable for a college administrator.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. There is a clear opening and closing. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'Apart from it' and 'Because of my' are used, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The transition between the cancellation request and the inquiry about other courses is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear focus would enhance the overall coherence of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be understood. You use some relevant terms such as 'fee structure', 'duration', and 'enrollment'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'humble request for the enrollment', which is not idiomatic in this context. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise and formal vocabulary suitable for a professional letter, and ensure that collocations are used accurately to convey your meaning more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'how can I make' (should be 'how I can make'), 'attend the all classes' (should be 'attend all the classes'), and 'provide me any other courses list' (should be 'provide me with a list of other courses'). Additionally, there is a punctuation error in the sign-off ('Your sincerely' should be 'Yours sincerely'). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
