Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you to cancel my booking for the Information Security course. I am a Lecturer in Computer Science that's why I need to sharp my abilities in Cryptography. I am free in evening so I chose the this program but after overview the outline of the class my opinion was changed.
Furthermore, these topics are for beginners and I am very good at encryption. Decryption is my weak area and it was on advanced level. Moreover, also I need Hands-on practice for ethical hacking.
Therefore, I just want to know about a new course whether you offer a Blockchain course. This is a rapidly growing field and I want to learn new techniques of data security. If you are offering this course please let me know.
Thank you for understanding.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have addressed all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the cancellation, and inquiring about an alternative. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the overall task completion. While the ideas are relevant, the explanation regarding why the course is unsuitable is slightly repetitive and could have been developed more professionally. To improve, ensure you meet the minimum word count by expanding on your professional background or the specific reasons for your interest in the new course, ensuring all instructions are fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request to cancel to the explanation and finally the inquiry. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the paragraphing is somewhat disjointed, and the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus. The transition between your current skills and the request for a new course could be smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Information Security', 'Cryptography', and 'encryption'. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'need to sharp my abilities' (should be 'sharpen') and 'after overview the outline' (should be 'after reviewing'). These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise word choice and better control over collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal, academic-appropriate phrases would enhance the professional tone of your letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Your writing uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am a Lecturer in Computer Science that's why I need to...' (a run-on/comma splice issue) and 'I chose the this program' (an article error). Additionally, 'I am very good at encryption' is a bit informal. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and avoiding informal sentence connectors to improve your accuracy.
