Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to you, that I want to cancel my upcoming part time course, which I was enrolled in your college.
As you know that I had a lot of interest in the accounting subject, and I wanted to gain more knowledge on that particular subject. So I decided to book an basic Accounting certificate programme from your college. The semester was about to start from September 2026. I was informed this course will last for 12 months covering 8 basic accounting subjects.
But recently, my company has told me to do and advance diploma programme on supply chain management. As this programme will help to gain more knowledge in the current field that I am working in. Also, there are many new technology, and techniques that have emerged in the field of supply chain. In order to complete this studies as my first priority, I need to cancel my Accounting programme.
I would definitely pursue the Accounting course in future. I wanted to know that does your institute provide any of the advance Supply chain programme. I would like to know that how long will that course be?. There is one more thing this course will be funded by my Company, so does your college accepts the scholarships or the funded education. I am looking to start this course in the coming semester, that is September 2026.
I am looking forward to your response, and willing to know all the information regarding the new course.
Kind regards,
Nizamuddin Memon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course you booked (Accounting certificate), explained the reason for cancellation (a new opportunity for an advanced diploma in supply chain management), and inquired about alternative courses and funding. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your specific questions regarding future study and financial support. The letter is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of your request. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the cancellation, the explanation, and the follow-up questions. While the use of cohesive devices is generally clear, some transitions are slightly mechanical, such as 'But recently' or 'Also, there are many'. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the flow. However, the overall organization is clear, and the message is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrolled', 'certificate programme', 'pursue', and 'scholarships'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do an advance diploma' (should be 'pursue' or 'take') and 'does your college accepts' (should be 'accept'). Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('does your college accepts') and article usage ('an basic Accounting'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'I am writing this to you, that I want to cancel'. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic agreement errors and refining the structure of your complex sentences to ensure they are grammatically sound.
