Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the part-time course of regulatory affairs that i booked on last week want to cancel it. As i was keen interested in regulatory affairs subject i booked it and when i went to the website i checked that there was the another course which was part-time and suitable and convenient for me. So i decided to changed the subject from regulatory to pharmacovigilance.

I was confused about the course and both subjects fascinated me. I did a lot of research and concluded to cancel the primary course as the second one was more suitable for me. I would like to know more details about it. When will the course begin? What will the duration of this course be? and the fee structure. I am excited to join the classes.

Thank you for your consideration and time.

Yours faithfully,

Sahista

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and inquiring about a new course. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, you mention being 'keen interested' and 'confused' about the subjects, which could have been more concisely stated to allow for a more professional explanation of your change of plans. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader understands your request immediately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'So' and 'As' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the natural progression of your argument. For example, the transition between explaining the cancellation and asking for details about the new course is a bit abrupt. Improving the use of linking phrases like 'consequently' or 'furthermore' would enhance the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'regulatory affairs', 'pharmacovigilance', and 'fee structure'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'keen interested' (should be 'keenly interested') and 'concluded to cancel' (should be 'decided to cancel'). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'i booked on last week want to cancel it' (missing subject/verb agreement and awkward phrasing), 'i checked that there was the another course' (incorrect article usage), and 'decided to changed' (incorrect verb tense). While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to indicate a lack of control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will significantly improve your score.
