Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to cancel my booking for the part- time course I recently booked at your college.

Last month, I enrolled in the general science course in order to pursue my career in the healthcare field. To be of no doubt I have a keen interest in the science course and I never thought of quitting my dream in the healthcare.

unfortunately, I have to cancel the booking as I am working in the warehouse as the full-time employee and last week, I didn't meet the sale target. I have to work hard and cover all these requirements in order to save my job otherwise my job will be in danger.

Furthermore, once my target will be met, I will definitely book another course which will be more beneficial than a general science. I hope you will understand my situation.

Hope to hear from you,

Your's sincerely,

sandeep kaur.

Overall6.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the task: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and inquiring about future enrollment. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Dear sir' should be 'Dear Sir or Madam' as instructed. The ideas are relevant and clearly communicated, though the explanation regarding the warehouse job could be more concise to allow for a more professional tone. Overall, you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'in order to', which assist in linking ideas. However, the transition between the explanation of your job situation and the request for a future course could be smoother. The paragraphing is sufficient, but ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear idea to improve the overall flow. The structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrolled', 'pursue', and 'beneficial'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'To be of no doubt' (which is non-standard) and 'working in the warehouse as the full-time employee' (which should be 'a full-time employee'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate your score. The spelling is generally accurate, though 'Your's' should be 'Yours'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'once my target will be met' (should be 'once my target is met') and 'I never thought of quitting my dream in the healthcare' (should be 'in healthcare'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some inconsistencies with capitalization and spacing (e.g., 'part- time'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on verb tense consistency and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
