IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.
Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:
- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
My name is Mihir Vora from Mechanical Engineering section A, writing this letter to cancel my registration for part-time course which is starting from next week.
I was very excited when I enrolled myself to learn newly launched part-time course called Advance Robotics. We have a subject called Robotics in our regular classes however, this advanced version and in depth course will definitely help each and everyone to learn and understand the concept very clearly.
Unfortunately, as I am in my 4th semester, I was also applying for an Internship between my semester to get hands on experience in my major. Thus, I got selected in Tata Motors, as a Trainee Engineer and this is a contract base offer letter for 9 months moreover, this is a full time position. And the starting date is clashing to our new course date.
Although, as our college is offering multiple part-time courses and some of them are hybrid to attend. Is it possible I can register myself for an alternative course which is conducted virtually related to robotics?
I hope you understand my situation, and do the needful from your end.
Regards,
Mihir Vora

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the course (Advance Robotics), explain the reason for cancellation (a conflicting internship offer at Tata Motors), and inquire about alternative virtual options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough context to justify the request without becoming overly wordy. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing request is polite and direct. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the purpose of the letter to the explanation and finally the request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'Thus', and 'Although' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt, and some sentences could be better connected to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a well-organized response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'contract base offer letter' and 'hands on experience' are relevant to the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'clashing to our new course date' (should be 'clashing with') and 'do the needful' (which is an Indian English idiom that may not be universally understood in an international IELTS context). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise academic or professional terminology would elevate the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'writing this letter' (should be 'I am writing'), 'newly launched part-time course' (missing an article 'a'), 'between my semester' (should be 'semesters'), and 'clashing to' (should be 'clashing with'). Additionally, the sentence 'Although, as our college is offering...' is grammatically fragmented. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
