Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to cancel the booking of the Personal support worker part-time course, which is suppose to start on 3 August on your Belleville campus.

I need to cancel my enrollment as I am no longer going to pursue career in healthcare. My Lawyer has suggested to invest in my language test to improve my score for my permanent resident application. Therefore, I would like to get the refund for this course so that I can take classes to improve my writing skills.

Also, I had done some research and found that your college is providing one to one program to improve writing in english. This course teach basic concepts of grammar and senstence making. I would love to enroll in this course. I want to imprve my writing score for the immgration purpose. Hence, this english course will help me to get my desired score.

I look forward to study in your college.

Yours faithfully,

Ram

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course to be cancelled, provided a logical reason for the cancellation, and inquired about an alternative course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details, such as the specific name of the alternative course or a request for the refund process, are presented with slightly more professional precision.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the explanation and finally the request for a new course. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'Also' to link your sentences. However, the transition between the cancellation and the new course request could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this course') is always clear to avoid any ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrollment', 'permanent resident application', and 'concepts'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'suppose' instead of 'supposed', 'senstence' instead of 'sentence', and 'imprve' instead of 'improve'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling errors and try to incorporate more precise collocations related to academic or administrative contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which is suppose to start' (should be 'supposed'), 'pursue career' (should be 'a career'), 'had done some research' (should be 'have done' or 'did'), and 'I look forward to study' (should be 'to studying'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the message from being understood. To improve, pay closer attention to verb forms, articles, and the correct usage of gerunds after specific phrases like 'look forward to'.
