Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam, and I am writing this letter to inform you to cancel my reservation in a part time course that I applied for.
So, the thing is two months back I applied for a business accounting course as a part time student, and I was not sure how long I will be staying in a country because my visa status was on hold. But now when I received the final decision about my visa status, and also became the permanent resident of Canada. Therefore, I would like pursue further studies as a full time student.
In order to study as a full time student not only I need to cancel my reserved seat as a part time student, but also start exploring full time courses options. Thus, I would also like to draw your attention and want you to help me in this search. I heard about pursuing CPA course a lot, but I am not sure if college still has any seat available in this.
Please let me know if the seat is still available, if not I would like to get some information about CMA course.
Please consider this formal letter as part of widrawing an application from the part time course I applied in and please provide the information about payment refund.
Please do not hesitate to contact should you require any information.
Thank you and have a pleasant day.
Sincerely,
Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course, provided a logical reason for cancellation (change in visa status), and inquired about alternative full-time options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that all requests are phrased with consistent formality; for instance, the transition from the cancellation request to the inquiry about new courses is handled well, but the overall structure could be slightly more concise to maintain a professional tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the explanation and finally the request for information. Paragraphing is used, though the letter could benefit from clearer separation between the cancellation request and the inquiry about new courses. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'In order to', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'Please' at the start of multiple sentences in the final paragraph. Improving the variety of linking phrases would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reservation', 'permanent resident', and 'withdrawing'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'pursuing CPA course a lot' (which is slightly informal) and 'widrawing' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations, such as 'enrolling in a course' instead of 'applied for a course', would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am not sure how long I will be staying in a country' (should be 'the country') and 'I would like pursue' (missing 'to'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'I would also like to draw your attention and want you to help me'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures and proofreading for minor articles and prepositions will help.
