Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to cancel my course that i booked last week.
Last week i took admission in your college part time language program. I am very exited and curious to learn about French, and when i saw you are offering it in fall for only 4 months and i can learn at least basic knowledge of French so i enrolled in this course.
However, Unfortunately , i just get offer letter from my employer , that applied. For work purpose i am travelling India for next Four months and your program only available for in person. so, i can not continue this program.
Nevertheless, i would like to get another program from your college that offer online regarding French language or anything similar to this , because i do not want to loose this opportunity to learn new language ,if it is possible please let me know.
I look forward to your positive response.
Your faithfully,
Naznin.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation (work travel), and inquiring about an alternative online course. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening and closing salutations contain minor errors. The ideas are clearly presented and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistently formal throughout and avoid minor slips in task-specific conventions, such as the salutation and sign-off.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each addressing a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the cancellation to the reason and then to the request for an alternative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., the use of 'however' and 'nevertheless'). Some transitions between sentences feel slightly abrupt due to punctuation errors. Improving the variety and natural flow of linking words would enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'enrolled' and 'opportunity'. However, there are several word-choice errors, such as 'took admission' (should be 'enrolled in') and 'loose' (should be 'lose'). Additionally, the phrasing 'get offer letter' is slightly informal and lacks precision. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring correct spelling of common words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'travelling India'), verb tenses ('i just get offer'), and capitalization ('i', 'india'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and missing spaces after punctuation marks. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for capitalization and article usage would significantly improve the score.
