IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.
Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:
- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to cancel my pre-booking application for Personal Support Worker Program. The course has been applied fifteen days ago and the processing time of application time is one month as per Sheridan College policies.
I make my mind to do Registered Practical Nursing from your college as I received my Permanent Residency in Canada five days ago. To be a Permanent Resident is a pre-requisite of this nursing program. That's why, I want to revoke my Personal Support Worker Program application.
I also want to know that whether the same application fees would be passed for the nursing program application or I would be charged separately. Is this program available in the Brampton campus?
I will be waiting for your response as I have to apply for the next course within the application time period. Otherwise, it would be missed from my hands.
Yours sincerely,
Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course to be cancelled, provided a logical reason for the cancellation (the change in your residency status), and inquired about the possibility of enrolling in a different program. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your specific questions regarding fees and campus availability. You have maintained a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph serving a clear purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'That's why' and 'I also want to know' to link your ideas. However, the progression between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the application history and the reason for cancellation is slightly abrupt. While the paragraphing is sufficient, the use of more sophisticated linking words or phrases would improve the flow and help the reader navigate your request more easily. Overall, the message is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pre-booking application', 'pre-requisite', and 'revoke'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'The course has been applied' (should be 'I applied for the course') and 'it would be missed from my hands' (which is an unnatural idiom). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively to the college administrator.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I make my mind' (should be 'I have made up my mind') and 'I also want to know that whether' (the 'that' is redundant). Additionally, 'the same application fees would be passed' is slightly awkward phrasing. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing your control over verb tenses and prepositional phrases would help elevate your score.
