Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to withdraw my registration from the part-time course I had enrolled previously. I had sought admission in personal support worker course at your college that runs on weekday evenings for 2 hours from 6-8pm. It is an accelerated course aimed to run for 6 months and students are expected to have a hundred percent attendance to get a certificate.
I need to cancel my enrolment due to a change in my full-time job. I worked as a construction worker at the Surrey-Langley Skytrain expansion project. But, due to unforeseen circumstances, I was laid off a week ago. Hence, I applied and secured a job in the Fraser Valley Hospital, which is a full-time night shift office attendant job on weekdays.
I am now interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. I would appreciate if you can suggest some courses related to nursing offered on weekends, so I can still pursue my career. Should you have any questions, please let me know.
Yours Sincerely,
Peter Anderson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the course (Personal Support Worker), provide a logical reason for the cancellation (a change in employment status), and make a relevant inquiry about alternative weekend courses. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'But', and 'I am now interested in' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow between the explanation of your job change and your request for a new course is smooth and natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal context, such as 'withdraw my registration', 'unforeseen circumstances', and 'pursuing a career'. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach the highest bands. There are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is precise enough to convey your meaning clearly throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
Your grammar is generally strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate control over verb tenses and sentence construction. There are minor slips, such as 'I had sought admission in personal support worker course' (missing an article 'a' before 'personal') and 'I worked as a construction worker' (which should be 'I was working' to reflect the past continuous nature of the job held before the layoff). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication.
