Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter for cancellation a part-time course which I booked a month ago.

Let me explain more, actually I am working in Microsoft company as junior manager and to achieve a post of senior manager in company, I decided to enrolled in Information technology course in Algoma University which was part time from 5 pm to 9 pm. Although timing was perfectly matching with my work, few days ago my employer changed my schedule due to which I want to cancel this course.

It would be better for me if you will register me in business management course because this is the only course which is perfectly matching with my work so that I can focus on my study without any distraction and could you also adjust my fees which I already paid for my previous course.

Hope to have a positive response from your side as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Jaswinder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a transfer. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited. While the reason for cancellation is clear, the request for a different course could be more specific regarding the course name or schedule. The letter is functional and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Let me explain more, actually...' is informal and slightly disjointed. The flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'therefore') rather than relying on simple conjunctions. Paragraphing is present but could be more clearly defined to separate the request from the explanation.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'achieve a post of senior manager' (should be 'attain the position of') and 'enrolled in' (should be 'enroll in'). The phrase 'perfectly matching' is repeated, which limits the lexical range. While the meaning is always clear, the student relies on basic phrasing rather than more precise, professional terminology suitable for a formal request to an administrator.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'cancellation a part-time course' (should be 'cancelling a part-time course'), 'I decided to enrolled' (should be 'I decided to enroll'), and 'if you will register me' (should be 'if you could register me'). The sentence structure is mostly simple or compound, with limited use of complex grammatical structures. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
