Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to cancel my part-time course that I have just booked a week ago due to a personal reason.

I registered for a part-time yoga course for four weeks in your college which is going to begin in two weeks. But, unfortunately I am not able to start the course because I am moving with my family to Agra as my father got a short notice job transfer due to some government emergencies. So, pursuing study from their, is pretty difficult for me.

If you know any other course which can be online and can be studies from Agra through online applications then please suggest me. In this way, we can adjust the fees and also, I will be able to complete my short-term diploma.

I hope you will write me back as soon as possible with the suggestion of an another interesting course.

Yours faithfully,

Harpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the yoga course, provided a logical reason for the cancellation (a family relocation due to a job transfer), and made a relevant inquiry regarding alternative online options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the closing request is slightly more formal and that the transition between the cancellation and the request for a new course is seamless.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use some cohesive devices such as 'But, unfortunately' and 'In this way' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more balanced to ensure a smoother progression of information throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'registered', 'pursuing', and 'short-term diploma'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'pursuing study from their' (should be 'there') and 'write me back' (more formally, 'reply to me'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to administrative procedures would enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'booked a week ago' (should be 'booked a week ago' or 'booked last week') and 'can be studies' (should be 'can be studied'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and preposition errors, such as 'from their' instead of 'from there'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
