Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter regarding a part-time course which I booked last month. Firstly, I thought to learn about the IT management but due to my job responsibilities, I need to cancel it.

After completing my program in School, I started looking for jobs related to Computer Networking and eventually I have been interviewed by one of the major company, Telus. The other reason is the availability of classes. My current job timings does not allow me to attend classes in the morning which is unlike Computer Networking.

The job is related to networking so, I would rather prefer to take Computer networking so, I can grab the knowledge related to the wireless sensors in detail. The company demands me to have knowledge about the new alarm systems in depth.

Please inform me, if there is any seat available currently to pursue my job related course, at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Arshdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the cancellation, and requesting a different course. However, the development of ideas is somewhat confusing. The explanation for the cancellation is muddled by irrelevant details about the job interview process and a lack of clarity regarding the specific course title. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the connection between the current job responsibilities and the need to change courses could be more logically articulated to fully satisfy the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the flow of ideas is occasionally disjointed. For example, the transition between the job interview and the issue with class timings is abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly' and 'The other reason', but the overall progression of the argument feels a bit mechanical. The referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when discussing the 'job related course' versus the 'Computer Networking' course, which makes the reader work harder to follow the narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some attempts at more specific terminology, such as 'job responsibilities' and 'Computer Networking'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'grab the knowledge' and 'major company', which sound slightly unnatural. The range is sufficient to convey the message, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for a higher band score. Spelling is accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow, such as 'I thought to learn about' (should be 'I intended to study'), 'one of the major company' (should be 'companies'), and 'timings does not allow' (should be 'timing does not allow'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the core message, they are frequent enough to suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
