You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to cancel my part-time course in Environmental field.

A couple of weeks ago, I have booked my part-time course of Environmental technician for the next month which I want to cancel it.

The most obvious reason is that this course will not be completed in your institute in the next month because one of my friend is facing trouble to find out the job in which I enrolled. Thus, I want to change my course.

Moreover, I would like to enroll in different course of Gas Technician for the same time and transfer my fees. Please let me know how can I transfer my enrollment in the new course and which steps should I take to complete this procedure?.

I sincerely hope you will consider this request and hear back from you as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Happy Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and requesting a transfer to a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the explanation for the cancellation is somewhat confusing; stating that a friend is having trouble finding a job in that field does not clearly explain why you personally need to cancel. To improve, ensure your reasoning is logical and directly related to your own circumstances. The letter is well-structured and covers all requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with clear paragraphing that separates the introduction, the explanation, the request, and the closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Thus' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between your reason for cancelling and your request for a new course is smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'enroll', 'procedure', and 'institute'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'in Environmental field' (should be 'in the environmental field') and 'transfer my enrollment in the new course' (should be 'transfer my enrollment to the new course'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would elevate the response to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I have booked' should be 'I booked' (past simple for a finished time), and 'one of my friend is' should be 'one of my friends is'. Additionally, the sentence 'which I want to cancel it' contains a redundant pronoun. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading regarding verb tenses and subject-verb agreement.
