Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you for the cancellation of part-time course which I recently enrolled for and need your assistance on booking different course.
Last Sunday, I applied for Business Administration course through online website of your university. Although this course was related to my career, I relalised that office administration would be the best choice for my success. Therefore, I am requesting you to cancel the previously selected course and give me an admission in the office administration course.
I would appreciate it if you could transfer the amount which I paid in advance and would also be grateful if you could send me the details of office administration course along with registration form. However, the admission process of both courses are different, it is still the part of same university. Consequently, I would be delighted to fullfill all the necessary requirements of admission process.
Looking forward to your positive response on this matter.
Yours Faithfully,
Sapna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course you booked (Business Administration), explained the reason for the cancellation (a change in career focus to office administration), and requested information regarding a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the response remains focused throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the request for cancellation to the explanation and finally the inquiry about the new course. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Therefore', and 'Consequently' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the structure is appropriate for a formal correspondence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrolled', 'assistance', and 'appreciate'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'relalised' (realised) and 'fullfill' (fulfill). Additionally, the phrase 'request you for the cancellation' is slightly unnatural; 'request the cancellation of' would be more idiomatic. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. Focusing on collocations and proofreading for spelling will help improve this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'booking different course' (missing an article: 'a different course') and 'the admission process of both courses are different' (subject-verb agreement: 'is different'). Furthermore, the sentence 'However, the admission process of both courses are different, it is still the part of same university' is a comma splice and lacks the correct article before 'same'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over articles and complex sentence punctuation is recommended.
