IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this to inform you for the cancellation of a part-part course, which I booked at your college. This one-year course titled with the International Business Management, and particularly focused on the team building skills.

The reason to cancel is that the course timing does not align with my shift schedule. According to the present timetable, all the classes will complete before 4:30 which will never suit my shift schedule, as I work in morning shift from 7 am to 3. Additionally, college provides this offline batch only, not even recorded lecture videos.

I would appreciate that if you offer me any similar course with the different timetable. I am always free after 4 pm and able to join both online and offline classes. If you give me any program related finance management that would be more beneficial for me, because it will significantly enhance my practical thoughts and ideas.

I hope you will understand my situation.

Yours sincerely,

Supreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course, explained the scheduling conflict, and inquired about alternatives. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. However, the development of ideas could be slightly more refined. For instance, the explanation regarding the 'morning shift' is clear, but the phrasing 'practical thoughts and ideas' is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that the purpose of each paragraph is explicitly linked to the requirements of the task. Overall, you have provided a complete and relevant response that fulfills the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'However' to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. To improve, try to use a wider range of linking words to create a smoother flow between sentences. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the cancellation and the request for a new course could be more fluid. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the progression of ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'align', 'beneficial', and 'significantly enhance'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'part-part course' (likely a typo for 'part-time') and 'titled with the International Business Management' (should be 'titled International Business Management'). Additionally, 'practical thoughts' is not a standard collocation in this context. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word selection. Expanding your vocabulary to include more specific professional terminology would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'inform you for the cancellation' (should be 'inform you of the cancellation'), 'all the classes will complete' (should be 'will be completed'), and 'I would appreciate that if you offer me' (should be 'I would appreciate it if you could offer me'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on verb patterns and preposition usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band.
