Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express you about part-time course which I recently enrolled. But now I want to cancel my booking due to my interest towards different course.

Actually few weeks ago I have confirmed my admission in IT course as per my friend recommended. At that time I did not think about this course much but after concerning with my parents I think I took wrong decision.

But now I think the course is not useful for me because my Past academic background was chemistry. As a result, I decided to enroll in lab technician course. I am requesting to you please transfer my admission from IT field to lab technician.

I hope you will accept my transferation request and if the course fees have any difference then let me know I will ready to pay the amount. I hope will you understand my situation and allow me to start the course which I really want to start.

Yours sincerely,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the course is identified, the reason for cancellation is explained, and a request for a transfer is made. However, the tone is somewhat informal and repetitive. The explanation regarding the change from an IT course to a lab technician course is clear, but the development of ideas is slightly simplistic. The letter fulfills the requirements of the task, but the expression of ideas could be more professional and concise to better suit the formal context of a letter to a college administrator.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'Actually few weeks ago' and 'But now I think' are used as transitions, but they feel slightly unnatural for a formal letter. The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create a more sophisticated structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'express you about' instead of 'inform you about' and the non-existent word 'transferation'. While the meaning is generally clear, the student relies on basic vocabulary and struggles with collocations. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more formal, precise terminology related to academic administration and avoid word-choice errors that detract from the professional tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'as per my friend recommended' (should be 'as my friend recommended'), 'concerning with my parents' (should be 'consulting with my parents'), and 'I will ready to pay' (should be 'I am ready to pay'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the writing.
