Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am reaching out to request for the cancelation of my part time course, I recently booked. I booked the 'IT' course last month. The reason behind this decision is that my company is providing me with full assistance for another course 'MBIT', that is more effective for my career growth.
The previous course was of one year but this is a long course and its tenure is about two years. In addition, this is more beneficial for my office work hopefully for professional development. Actually, my knowledge on IT is rudimentary, so this course would provide me adequate learning but also would prove a milestone to achieve my goals.
I request you humbly, that cancel my previous course and instead provide me the opportunity to take admission for the required course that is, 'MBIT'. Please let me know if any other official statement is required, so that I could be able to submit fees for the new course.
Yours sincerely,
Sobia.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the IT course, explain the reason for cancellation (company support for the MBIT course), and ask about switching to the new course. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. However, the development of ideas is slightly repetitive, particularly regarding the benefits of the new course. To improve, ensure that the explanation for the cancellation is concise and focused on the administrative request rather than providing excessive detail about the course content, which helps maintain a professional tone throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate the main points, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'The reason behind this decision', which aid flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the connection between sentences is smoother. For instance, the transition between the explanation of the new course and the request to switch could be more fluidly integrated.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'rudimentary', 'tenure', and 'professional development' effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'request for the cancelation' (should be 'request the cancellation') and 'take admission' (should be 'enroll'). While these errors do not impede communication, they show a need for more precise usage. Expanding your vocabulary to include more formal business-related collocations would enhance the professional quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph ('...part time course, I recently booked'), and issues with article usage and prepositional phrases (e.g., 'my knowledge on IT' should be 'my knowledge of IT'). Additionally, the phrasing 'so that I could be able to' is redundant. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and reducing wordiness will help improve your accuracy.
