Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have been enrolled in Master of Business Administration (Technology and Innovation) stream with student ID- PA23105. I am writing this to express my concern regarding cancelation of a part-time course I chose recently.
As you know, when the self-enrolment portal was open on the 3rd of August, students in first semester were supposed to book a part-time course along with the full-time courses. Therefore, I opted for Intro to business course every Thursday at 12:30pm.
However, I need to cancel my booking as soon as possible because recently when I had a discussion with my batchmates about this course, they told me that this course is only beneficial for those who are not from business stream in their bachelors. The students who have done science or arts are chosing this part-time course. Whereas I have completed my BBA as bachelors. So, this course is not meant for me.
Adding to this, I would really appreciate it if you could help me in booking another course. I have decided to go with Financial Analytics course which is on every saturday at 3 pm. So, please book my course as soon as possible as the classes are going to start this week.
Thank you so much for your assistance and patience. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Kunwar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course you booked, provided a logical reason for the cancellation, and made a specific request to enroll in a different course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have maintained a consistent and professional tone throughout the response, which is essential for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You have used cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Adding to this', and 'Therefore' effectively to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure follows the standard conventions of a formal letter. The information is easy to follow, and the relationship between the cancellation and the new request is clearly established.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use subject-specific terms like 'self-enrolment portal' and 'batchmates' correctly. While some phrasing is slightly repetitive or could be more sophisticated (e.g., 'I opted for' or 'I have decided to go with'), the meaning is always clear. There are no significant spelling errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or varied academic vocabulary to describe your academic background and course preferences.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'Intro to business course' (should be 'the Intro to Business course') and 'on every saturday' (should be 'on every Saturday'). Additionally, 'chosing' is a spelling error. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your control over grammar is strong, and the errors do not cause any confusion for the reader. The punctuation is generally correct throughout the letter.
