Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I planned to cancel my booking for upcoming part-time course due to some reason.

Last week, I got offer letter for an Early childhood educator diploma and then I secured a seat by paying half amount of college fees. But now I released that this program is not appropriate for me. As, I had already completed three years degree in this particular field. It will be only wastage of time and money if I joined this course. Moreover, I decided to withdraws my seat and can request for refundable my fees.

I would like to request you for recommendation regarding further upcoming courses. It will help me to decide a program which can add more experience and qualification in my life. Hence, I will be able to join part time program to proceed further.

I hope you would take my suggestion into your consideration and act accordingly.

Yours sincerely,

Arpan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and asking about alternative options. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is slightly hindered by grammatical inaccuracies, such as the phrase 'due to some reason,' which is vague. To improve, ensure that your explanation is more specific and professional. While you have covered all requirements, the expression of these ideas could be more polished to ensure the reader fully understands your situation without ambiguity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used basic cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Hence' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is a bit abrupt. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this program') is always clear. Overall, the message is easy to follow, but the cohesion is somewhat mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'withdraw,' 'refundable,' and 'qualification.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'released' instead of 'realized,' 'wastage of time' instead of 'waste of time,' and 'request for refundable my fees.' These errors occasionally distract the reader. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations correctly and expanding your range of formal vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'I planned to cancel' (should be 'I am writing to cancel'), 'I got offer letter' (missing article 'an'), and 'if I joined' (tense inconsistency). Additionally, 'withdraws my seat' contains a subject-verb agreement error. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent, they are frequent enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of your writing.
